Thanks to all who have responded so far. Now I need a conversion factor to
take international units per liter, to nanograms per milliliter, or the
other way round. My trusty SI unit conversion guide doesn't even
acknowledge that prolactin can be measured in these two different units, but
it is over 20 years old.
The single test that we have on this mother was taken randomly. Since she
has been breastfeeding approximately 22 of every 24 hours since her baby was
one day old, it's hard to tell when pre- and postfeed are happening. She is
intra-feed virtually all the time, and she is not producing enough to make
the baby gain weight. Not losing, but not gaining, and not stooling,
either. There doesn't seem to be anything unusual about the baby except
perhaps her optimistic persistence. Ditto the mother, though her
persistence is getting less optimistic as time wears on.
One possibility we are entertaining is diabetes insipidus, due to other
symptoms. Still waiting for the tests on that, but wondering how to
interpret the prolactin level in the meantime.
Baby is getting supplemental formula as of yesterday, in case anyone is
worried we weren't feeding her :-)
