As well as a retired LLL Leader and an IBCLC working at a local hospital, I
am grandmother/day care provider for my 9th grandchild. The first time I
changed a stooled diaper, I asked my daughter about it. Being a first time
mom, she hadn't a care in the world that her baby's poop might be "odd". It
was exactly as you describe your son's stool. Rather puddingish, and not
curdy. I wondered if it was just a fluke. But now that he is 5 months old,
and I've had the immense pleasure of changing LOTS of poopy diapers, this
is "normal" for him. He frequently goes 2-3 days without a stool and
then...watch out! But I have yet to see the stool that I have been
familiar with for years out of this kid. The only thing I would be
concerned about is that of his comfort. My grandson doesn't seem at all
uncomfortable even if it's day 3 (or even an occasional 4) before he lets
loose. It comes when it comes! If at some point your son acts like he's
struggling and it seems like he may actually be constipated (which I can’t
even fathom…) then I can see the rectal stimulation. But if your son is
acting just fine, and seems to feel good, I would just wait out the
results. It is so important to remember that bell curve and recognize
individuality.
