If we were artificially-fed, they already got to our brains. Again, I
think that promoting breastfeeding has to involve an awareness of our
ecology on this planet. As Rachel said, when we avoid processed
foods, we pretty much avoid all of them and then we hurt them where
it matters most. You don't have to spend your time chasing down the
brands when you avoid the majority of them altogether. It's not
perfect, since these companies are pushing their way into "organic"
foods, but it is much easier.
I also don't understand the point in working so hard against all of
the cultural and medicalized barriers to succeed at breastfeeding and
then feed children on processed foods anyway. Breastfeeding is no
more a vaccine for AIM than it is for trans fats.
Thinking globally, when you avoid processed foods, you have an
impact on the lives of workers both in the west and in developing
nations whose lives and livelihoods are defined by our choices. Fair
trade, the environment, even slavery (think Hershey here:
http://www.foodrevolution.org/slavery_chocolate.htm) are all impacted
by our purchasing choices. It begins with breastfeeding, but is an
awareness that can surely continue well beyond breastfeeding and
circle back again as it so greatly affects the lives of so many
mothers of young children. I think the only means by which to boycott
Nestle in any significant and effective way is to boycott all of
these companies and eat whole foods.
