The ADA, AAP and USHHS position on environmental contaminants state that
reports of infant poisoning via breastmilk are rare. They note that effects
on breastfeeding infants have been primarily reported in cases where the
mother is clinically unwell.
Caution and commonsense are warranted in this area.  Formula feeding is so
socially acceptable as to be widely held as the default; as a safe
alternative to breastmilk.  Whenever environmental contaminant exposure via
breastmilk is discussed in the press, mothers (and some health
professionals) panic.   
As you have pointed out, the risks associated with not breastfeeding are
astronomical in comparison to the ordinary risks of environmental pollution.
