My son was diagnosed with Celiac just a few months ago. It is a terrible disease. After researching
about my diet while breastfeeding him...He is 17 months...I found that for most women the gluten
protein is too large to enter into the breastmilk and so should not (in most cases) effect the child
who is being breastfed. I still eat gluten and my son is recovering wonderfully. I am so thankful that I
breatfeed him because he was literally starving to death and breastmilk was the only thing that he
was digesting. He was still nursing every 1-2 hours especially when he got very sick and was
admitted to the hospital. There is also a new diagnosis procedure that is done by Entrolab and uses
the stool. You do not have to be on a gluten diet to be diagnosed by Entrolab. You do have to be on a
gluten diet to have the biopsy done.
I just wanted to add my personal experience to this discussion. I am training to be an LC and to take
the exam so I do not know everything but this is our personal story about breastfeeding and celiac.
