There's an entire generation of women who were told (in the 1950s) to gain
only 15 lb

Here in Japan, pregnant women are advised to gain only 8-10 kgs for those
very reasons. Which means that the non-Japanese mothers are getting lectured
at every prenatal visit about their "excessive" weight gain, even though it
might be within the range of normal for Western mothers. This can be very
upsetting for those mothers, who are often told that because of the weight
gain they will have a difficult birth. Many of them end up dieting during
pregnancy, and yet still gain more than the recommended amount.
