Heather: One must be very careful about singing the praises of improved
breast pump technology and exclusive breastpumping. I work with a
population with a very large disposable income. These moms will begin
pumping their breasts without any rational reason in a heartbeat. I don't
have any numbers, unfortunately, but I can pretty accurately guess that the
percentage of moms doing this in my corner of the world is higher than I am
comfortable with. Some of these moms choose to pump without ever putting
their babies to the breast; some are pumping because of breastfeeding
problems; and some feel pressured into pumping by the "system" (HCPs, LCs,
partner, family, etc). What few people realize, is the HUGE time
committment and for a mother with other children at home or responsiblities
outside the home, pumping even part-time may be next to impossible. I have
seen many mothers who are now at wits' end and at great risk for postpartum
depression because they feel they "have to pump". Mothers are making
themselves feel guilty about not giving their baby their milk.
I think the solution is to sit down with a mother and go over realistic
options with her and help her develop a plan for feeding her baby that
takes her entire life situation into consideration.
The last thing a new mother needs is more GUILT!
Sorry for the rant.
