A question for you wise ladies: I've started giving moms the WHO growth
charts when there are any growth concerns, but I just ran into something new
today with a pediatrician. The baby in question seems to be settling in
nicely (after some initial slow growth concerns - can't wait for the
clinical day at ILCA to expand my knowledge on this!!) at a 25th percentile
curve. I'm happy with this - mom and grandma are petite, dad is a real
string bean, it seems appropriate for this child. But the ped seems to want
her closer to 75th percentile, as this was her birthweight's placement. Now,
from personal experience, my kids were 8-5 and 9 lbs at birth, and have
settled into the 15th and 25th percentiles, respectively, and nobody was
ever concerned. My husband's a small guy, and they're growing more like he
did, but with a birthweight more like mine (9-11, thank you very much!).
So - once a baby has reached the magical milestone of "back to
birthweight", and is gaining at least 1/2 ounce/day, do we just let them
settle into their curve? At what age do you usually have a sense of when a
baby has found their curve? For my kids, it wasn't till 6 months, but they
held their 6 month spot pretty consistently.
Would love to hear any and all thoughts on this - with references, if you're
so inclined!
Thanks loads,
Kirsten Berggren, PhD, CLC
