Milk thistle (Silybum miranum) is used as a liver cleanser but also a
favorite galactagogue of Tierna Low Dog, MD (what I've heard from others who've
heard her speak). Blessed thistle (cnicus benedictus) is "an appetitie
stimulant which stimulates secretion of saliva and gastric juices," Sheila Humphrey's
The Nursing Mother's Herbal.
~~ Thanks for the clarification, but I'm still confused, Hale lists Blessed
Thistle as something used as a galactagogue, but with no results of it
working, and also lists Milk Thistle as the same, in terms lack of efficacy. But
'tis true they are very different herbs. I just looked at a Traditional
Medicinals tea bag ( a promo I got somewhere) and it doesn't have either one.
A local LC who is trained as an herbalist often recommends red raspberry and
blessed thistle to her moms.
Peace,
