Dear Friends:
I met a 14-year old first time mother last weekend.
Don't get me started about why her parents didn't pursue legal action for
statutory rape...........most teens that get pregnant are with older guys,
and often there is some coercion involved. That isn't an issue any more, at
least in the PHiladelphia area.
But she said she wanted to breastfeed. She didn't in the
hospital..........she is very shy and quiet and got overwhelmed by everything, including the
birth. She was so obviously overwhelmed that all I could do was show her how to
lie down and hold her baby close. She hadn't even unwrapped him at that point.
I've been calling her at home............and she is breastfeeding more
and more each day. The hook for her was that her baby would be smiling at her
because he knows where the milk is! She'll be going back to school, and her
mother will be caring for the baby; but this boy will definitely know who his
mother is.
Care for her has consisted of one message per contact. After 5 contacts,
she is finally asking me questions.
Slow and steady sometimes wins the race.
warmly,
