Posting with permission in hopes of getting a referral for my frantic
neighbor. She is 38 years old. History: Hodgkins at 20, chemo etc. Healthy
until this summer, then diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Thyroid was
removed, she was doing well on synthroid until she found a lump in her
right breast, just underneath the areola, about a month ago. Went to her
OB/GYN who did not seem to think it urgent that my neighbor have her
annual mammogram moved up. My neighbor disagreed and scheduled her
mammagram for last week. It showed a cluster of microcalcifications under
the areola. She went for another type of test (sorry to be so vague on
names/terminology, I am new at this), and they mentioned the scary
words "ductal carcinoma". She can also express a " sometimes cottage
cheesy, sometimes clear liquid" from this breast. She breastfed her now 11
year-old son for about three months. She is wanting to get the recommended
biopsy scheduled a.s.a.p and is not able to get anyone to expedite her
care. She seems to have a bad luck history of docs who say "we'll wait and
see" and in the past has pushed the issue and gotten the care she needs.
The thyroid specialist she found stated that if she had not sought the
second opinion, and waited, she may not be here right now. So, she is
understandably NOT willing to trust her OB's laid-back attitude on this.
We are in the Harrisburg, PA area and would appreciate any referrals to a
specialist who can help her. We are near Baltimore MD, Hershey PA, and
Philadelphia PA if anyone in those areas is reading this. Thank you.
