Update on baby with a cleft palate who was discharged on day 4 having been
exclusively breastfed.
Mom was "insurance" pumping. On day 7 baby was gaining weight and still
exclusively breastfeeding. Unfortunately baby was not seen again until day
14. Major weight loss, total serum bilirubin of 318 (divide by 17 for
approx mg/Dl/day). Mother had stopped pumping. Mother worked hard at
getting calories into her baby (formula via cup) and increasing her milk
supply and flow by pumping. Baby looked dramatically better in a couple of
days. Baby is now 5 weeks old, gaining weight consistently, feeding well at
breast and having expressed breast milk via Softcup. Paediatrician has been
relatively supportive, but we will see what happens at 6-week paediatric
check-up. It is likely that the cleft repair will be done at 4 to 5 months.
