test weighing ...... is rarely accurate>>>>>
good point, ...If done *incorrectly*, yes the result will be *inaccurate*
and can lead to a negative impact/intervention.
If done correctly, the result will be very accurate and can be used in some
situations as a valuable piece of information.
"Done Correctly" includes a very accurate and well maintained scale, and
ensuring that the post weight represents just the milk intake.
For example; this may mean that if the diaper is changed, or clothing is
changed, during the feed, you post-weigh the baby with the used diaper/clothing
also on the scale, (fold used diapers and clothing so as to avoid/minimize
any evaporation) having zeroed or balanced the scale with a clean diaper that
the baby is wearing post feed, so that the new clean diaper is not a part of
the post-feed weight result.
No matter how you go about it, for the post weight, everything (ie;
clothing, diaper, urine, BM) should be the same as the pre feeding weight, except for
the milk intake. Any spit-up on a bib during the feeding should also be
accounted for.
I sometimes weigh a baby after the baby has fed from just one breast if mom
questions production or flow or milk output/baby intake concerns about one
breast -vs- the other.
I have had an occasion where, the baby did not urinate or have a bm or spit
up, or anything else, except possibly perspire and burn calories during the
feed, and the post-weight was *less than* the pre-weight. Yiks!
