Just an observation. When I see a newborn who has lost a great deal of
weight the first day, I first check to see if the weight is correct. If it
is, then I check the baby's chart and talk to the parents about the amount
of stools the baby has had. In some cases, newborns have had many many large
bowel movements the first day, and this contributes more than anything else
in my observation to the weight loss. I have yet to see a newborn with a
true large weight loss that has not had many large bowel movements. If we
were to weigh those diapers (which I am not recommending!) I would bet that
they stools added up to many ounces.
