Hello my Lactnet friends,
I haven't posted in a while. I have been going to school and absolutely
crazy swamped with my studies....
Anyhow, I got a pretty sad call yesterday from a man visiting from Poland
with his family. He'd gotten my name and phone number off of our local
breastfeeding coalitions website to ask me if it is legal to breastfeed in
public here in California. I assured him that it is and gave him resources
at where he could see the BF accomodation laws. He was very relieved that
his wife could feed their kids in public. They'd been in Austin TX before
coming to CA. and his wife was nearly arrested because of her "indecent
exposure" while tandem feeding her 15 mo. old and her 27 month ols
children. The officer handcuffed her right there in a cafe in Austin which
actually exposed her breasts much more than the tandem feed ever did. The
man was crying because he could tell that his wife was scared and
humiliated! He wanted to ensure that this would not happen here. I assured
him that it wouldn't
He gave me permission to post and wanted me to ask the question, "What
recourse does he have for this situation?" Was the situation in fact
warranted to cuff a woman and humiliate her and expose her so offensively
in public that way (Oh,BTW, they ended up having to pay a hefty fine,
too)? I know nothing of Texas BF laws. Can my fellow Texan BF advocates
educate me?
Thank you for your help.
Warmly,
Veronica B. Tingzon, IBCLC, RLC
