I have used a nipple shield on days 2 and 3 to get these babies to breast.
I work in both the hospital and private practice settings and became more
open to using a NS after seeing more than a few Mom's just give up on day
4 -5 because the baby has never L/O. On my NS care plan pumping is a must,
6 to 8 times a day post feeding until the milk supply is well established
then 4 times a day post feed to assure adequate emptying. Then stopped if
the NS is no longer needed or slowly decreased based on milk supply of Mom
and weight gain of baby.
