Italian MP wins breastfeeding battle

ROME, May 30 (UPI) -- Italian Parliament member Donatella Poretti won
installation of a nursery allowing her to safely breastfeed her 3-month-old
while at work, a report said.
Poretti, who had been required to go to the infirmary, threatened to
breastfeed daughter Alice in front of her colleagues unless a healthier
locale was found and House Speaker Fausto Bertinotti responded to her
letters of complaint since Parliament reconvened three weeks ago.
A room previously used by parliamentary aides was converted to a nursery.
"I'm obviously happy with this result but I wish it had come a little
sooner," Poretti, a Radical Party member, told the Italian news agency ANSA.
The Italian Society of Pediatricians says most mothers give up breastfeeding
once their 3-month maternity leave is over and they return to work.
"We're lagging behind other European countries in terms of work creches and
baby-care rooms," SIP President Giuseppe Saggese told ANSA.
