I very militantly voiced to him that women may "want" certain things but it
is the health care practitioners job to educate women about the pros/cons and
risks of these interventions. His response was that in our society women
come into prenatal care in the first trimester knowing what they WANT and
will not be swayed!!!
Dear Friends:
Mary describes a discussion she had with an OB/GYN about what women
want. The poor helpless OB has to give women what they want?
What happened to 'first do no harm'?
Wanting something is enough of a reason to give it? (I guess we'll
never be able to parent teens again!) So folks don't have to quit smoking, loose
weight, or take their prescription medication because they don't want to?
Such shoddy logic and abandonment of responsibility doesn't help anyone.
It doesn't help the women that have to live with the consequences, it
doesn't help the practitioner who has lost their own integrity, and it doesn't help
society when wanting something is permitted to supercede safety, health, and
economy.
