I have a patient here today who is 26 hours post-partum. It was a normal, non-traumatic delivery. She is nursing well and often with a good latch and audible swallow. The baby is producing wet diapers but only one meconium stool.
This morning the baby produced what appeared to be a bloodstained diaper ( it is a male baby) The pediatrician immediately told Mom to supplement with formula or water! How can this baby be dehydrated? I am horrified that she has been told to do this.
Any suggestions?
