I had a mom with a 2 wk old present with sore areolas. "They sting a
bit." Her OBGyn told her it was Montgomery glands. But it was nothing
like I had seen before. What I am used to seeing in the way of Montgomery
glands are 2mm or so bumps around the areola that vary in number from none
to 10 or so. This mom had about a 2 inch area on both breasts that started
at the nipple base and spread almost to outer edge of areola. It was a bit
raised and contained a zillion needle-tip sized bumps. It is more pronounce
on the upper aspect of the areola. She had it with her first child, tho
doesn't remember it stinging. She states that it goes away when she is not
breastfeeding or pregnant.

Is this just a normal variance?

She does have a history of eczema and was going to make an appt with
her dermatologist. I told her I would ask the "group" what they thought!

I love this site and am glad it has won such an award. And, Happy IBCLC
Day, (one day late) to everyone!
