Whoa Nikki,
Your post really hit home. Here is a list of things that I am
absolutely not allowed to tell women in the hospital where I work, and
if I do, I can lose my job:
1. epidurals can affect breastfeeding
2. breastfeeding increases IQ
3. tongue tie can affect speech later in life
4. a baby should not be given 60cc ( 2 oz) of artificial milk on
day 2 of life
5. if your baby has glucose levels of 45,46, 47, it is not a
problem in most of the world
6. even one bottle of artificial milk could cause health problems
I have been called to the head of the hospital so many times for telling
the truth, put on probation, chastised by my colleagues, and even
suspended for a certain period until I wrote a letter of
apology....everything I said was true, evidence based, and said in an
attempt to help moms and protect babies.
Why am I still working there, I ask myself every day? Because if I am
not there, those moms don't even have a chance to breastfeed.
Esther Grunis, IBCLC, who considers being called fanatic a compliment in
my workplace....and my answer is that I would rather be a fanatic than a
fraud
