I mentioned testing breastmilk because of elevated sodium. I agree it
probably didn't need to be done in the 2 cases I mentioned-and after the
fact I did educate the physician involved. However, I have seen babies in
our hospital who have been admitted to our PICU almost dead from
hypernatremic dehydration-according to Ruth Lawrence (page 448)"The sodium
of the infant's serum and mother's milk should be followed until normal".
Anyhow-my question was not when or if to test milk BUT if milk must be
tested(even if only because the physician thinks it should be tested)does
anyone have more info on how to do it properly?
