 Mary asks:
Do you think a Nipple Shield should be used at all in the first 2-3
days of life?
No. I agree with Mary. I rarely use nipple shields until at least day 4
or when the mom has an ample milk supply. I prefer to use spoon-feeding
in the first 3 days, with frequent breast-focusing if possible. We have
enough trouble squeezing the milk out into a spoon.
My vote is no on that one.
Many people forget to remind mom to pump when using nipple shields. I
believe in insurance pumping if mom is using a nipple shield, unless she
has an amazing milk supply. I also think that test weighing is
mandatory to check if there is milk transfer. Otherwise, I would do as
Cathy Genna suggests: take the shield back from the mom.
