On TV (I can't believe I'm using TV for a source), they get around the
misperception of "protects" meaning "protects absolutely" by saying "helps
protect," as in
"Regular exercise helps protect against heart disease."
Does it sound weaker, equivalent to, or more understandable than "reduces
risk"? I don't know.
Breastfeeding helps protect against breast cancer.
Breastfeeding reduces risk of breast cancer.
