A "short tongue" is usually an indication of a posterior tongue tie. Any
tongue tie predisposes to a shallow latch, which only compounds the
lousy sucking from tongue restriction.
The clucking or smacking sound seems to be caused by the frenulum
snapping the tongue back like an overstretched rubberband.
