Hi, All: I've been following the tongue-tie posts with interest. In my
area (NW suburbs of Chicago, IL) there is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon
who will do the procedure in his office using a CO2 laser. He maintains
that the "webbing" that goes from the underside of the tongue to the floor
of the mouth is not what is causing the problem. He feels its the
musculature of the floor of the mouth underneath the tongue that is too
tight in some babies, thereby causing feeding/speech difficulties. He holds
the tongue in his gloved fingers and lases these muscle fibers one by one
until he "feels" the tongue freed, then stops. Because he is using a cold
laser, he says there is no bleeding and no scarring. He has the parent
bring the baby in to the office in the car seat, sets the baby in the car
seat on the exam table, wheels his laser machine up to the table, and
performs his procedure. And because he does it in the office, the cost is
very minimal and covered by most insurance. Nursing moms claim it works!
He has spoken locally at LC meetings - maybe he would be willing to speak
on this topic at a conference...
I hope I've explained this correctly - some of my local colleagues who have
heard him speak also, could add to my explanation.
