Chris has asked about the status of the WHO growth charts for breastfed
babies. As ILCA's representative to the US Department of Agriculture's
Breastfeeding Promotion Consortium, we were informed by the CDC that the WHO
breastfeeding growth charts will be available for use in the US in March 2006, after
the CDC, AAP, and others determine how they can be used for growth monitoring
purposes in the US. I am not exactly sure what this will mean, as these
agencies and organizations have a tendency to interpret and implement WHO data and
recommendations to suit the staus quo. However the CDC has a great new
publication out on breastfeeding, “The CDC Guide to Breastfeeding Interventions.”
This is designed to help states and policy makers allocate funds in the most
effective manner to help utilize breastfeeding as a public health
intervention. The 67 page booklet is available from the CDC in hard copy by sending your
request to [log in to unmask] and can also be downloaded from the CDC website
at _www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding_ (http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding) . The hard
copy was available at the ILCA and La Leche League conference this past summer,
but is easily obtained if you find need for some validation and resources
for making changes.
