NIH PANEL TO REVIEW SAFETY OF SOY FORMULA A panel of 14 scientists convened
by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is reviewing recent research about
the safety of soy baby formula and a plant estrogen, genistein, found in soy
products. The panel has been asked to consider whether the current
scientific evidence is sufficient to reach conclusions about the safety of genistein
and soy formula in humans – and if not, what research is needed. Though soy
formulas have been used for more than three decades, some researchers are
concerned about genistein’s possible effects on human development and reproductive
health. The panel’s final report is expected to be released in six to eight
weeks, but the existing reports on soy formula and genistein from NIH’s
National Toxicology Program are available at _http://cerhr.niehs.nih.gov_
