Hi everyone,
I have permission to post. A mom has called me off and on for the past few
months with constipation in her 7 month old. She has exclusively breastfed
him until about 5 months at which time she introduced solids slowly. Since
he was about 2 months old he was one of those babies who stooled only once
per week. She was always concerned about this but I reassured her that he
was well, given that he gained well and thrived. She has always had a good
but not overabundant supply of milk. She reports the baby continues to
breastfeed several times per day , at least every 3 hours , and at night.
He is eating a variety of solids including cereal, fruit and veggies. He
continues to have infrequent stools but now they are very dry, round and
hard. I have never seen this in a breastfed baby before. She has tried
feeding him different fruits, not feeding him solids and only breastfeeding
but little change. The Pediatrician has no worries. She is going to ask for
a referral to a pediatric gastro for further evaluation. She is asking me
if there is anything she should add/ change in her own diet.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
