I totally agree with Catherine Watson Genna regarding this baby. Not at
birth weight by 2 weeks, not stooling, and fussy after feeds means
inadequate intake.. When a baby's caloric intake is not sufficient, he lacks
the vigor and organization to either get the milk that is there or to
improve the supply. I would strongly urge this mother to continue with
supplementing. When a baby is gaining with supplements added to
breastfeeding, the supplements may need to be slowly withdrawn. Before
stopping supplements, a through evaluation of supply and milk transfer
should be done. I like test weights along with pumping after as Catherine
mentioned. This way, you get to see what the baby can do and how robust (or
lack of) the supply really is. Supplementing can actually rescue
breastfeeding. Feed the baby, improve the supply, work on latch. This is
what may be needed here. Ann Anderson RN,IBCLC,NJ
