The questions of who should head up a Hospital Committee for Breasfeeding is
easy...someone who is willing to endure the slings and arrows of those who
don't care.
As that someone who founded and heads our hospital's committee I suggest you
need to be willing to be a presence and remind Management that they are
welcomed to attend and encourage them to share their thoughts. This is like one
committee they don't want to attend.
Be prepared to keep Breastfeeding needs of your patients in the forefront
and always be prepared to be evidenced based in your remarks.
Encourage anyone who is interested or supportive to attend, we include
Patient Care Technicians. Get everyone on board...include NICU and Labor and
Delivery, Days and Night Shifts, invite MDs and ARNPs from Peds and NICU and talk
up what was said and planned....just don't post the minutes...Talk it up.
Attend the OB and Pedi Committee meetings if necessary and report on your
Committee and remind them that you can compliment their work.
Should this amazing person be a MD or RN or LC....it doesn't really matter
as long as this person has credibility among the staff and staff will see this
person as a genuine resource.
Just a few observations.
