As I understand it, it is a matter of lactase. If there is a huge lactose-fat imbalans from oversupply baby's intestines may not be able to ingest the lactose due to a lactase level intended for normal amounts of lactose. These children will suffer from undigested alctose that will start fermenting, causing gas and malabsorption, thus growing only marhinally. Others may be able to cope with the lactose, maybe they produce more lactase themselves, they will process all lactose and get all of the calories out of it. And thus grow and thrive as they do.
