Good Morning! I need some help from anyone experienced with feeding a baby
(6wks old) with 3 cardiac defects ( small VSD and 2 "moderate atrial
defects" per Mom). Mom contacted me today for weight check. On exam, baby
is up only 2 pounds from birth, will nurse readily for approx 5 minutes
with only circumoral cyanosis observed and without apparent significant
oxygen desaturation. Heart rate does increase with feedings. Baby comes off
spontaneously and appears tired. Mom is supplementing with expressed breast
milk which is hard to feed to baby. Pre and post feed weight shows 1 oz
intake at breast. Cardiologist want to know how much she is feeding. No
intervention planned at this point.
My real question is this----after baby is unable to continue nursing, is
there a "better" way to supplement for a baby like this? This is a very
experienced dedicated breastfeeding Mom. I suggested the SNS but she had
experience with it from a previous child with a suck problem and "doesn't
want to go there again".
Suggestions, comments, awesome advice anyone?
Thanks so much for your help.
