Hi Jeroy,
I have a couple ideas about the baby's bloody bm's. First, if she is *just*
starting to get her OMER under control, baby could still have some rectal
fissures from forcefully passing those stools from before. It might take
some time to heal them to the point where they don't tear over and over at
each bm. Maybe she needs to keep baby on the same breast for a little
longer than 3 feeds? Some babies dealing with OMER can do 3 feeds within
only 3 hours (my ds was q45m!), so maybe switching to one side for a set
period of time, say, 6h, might work better at bringing the OMER under
control. Also lots of LC's strongly urge mom to "pump out" before limiting
baby to one side for a set time; maybe that might help your mom and baby get
on the right track.
My second thought was based more on the cow's milk sensitivity. Assuming
she is being absolutely militant about keeping ALL cow's milk products out
of her diet (i.e. she realizes non-dairy creamer is not dairy free and that
just one cookie couldn't possibly matter, etc.), baby might need to heal his
intestines from the exposure before being completely without bloody stools.
One mom I helped last fall was in the same situation and her son had regular
bloody stools even after her OMER was wonderfully controlled and she was
meticulous about her diet. She went to a naturopath who determined that
both mom and baby had leaky gut syndrome from the irritation of the
offending protein (casein). Although mom no longer ate any dairy products,
both her system and her baby's system were still basically shredded and raw
from the damage done. The naturopath gave her some natural remedies to help
heal them up (acidophilus and adrenal support, among a few others) and
baby's stool became blood-free within two days, for the first time in that
baby's four-month-long life. He didn't have one bloody stool after that and
she said he became "a different baby," so happy and no longer in pain.
