I'm sorry, Betsy, but your argument is akin to saying, "I know of lots of
breastfed babies who have been ill, which just underscores the idea that
breastfeeding is not important."
Rachel did, in fact, attribute the problems she is seeing to the use of a
medication, and there is solid research, not to mention decades of clinical
observation, linking drugged, highly interventionist birth practices to
early feeding difficulties.
Does low or no intervention birth guarantee perfect initiation of
breastfeeding? No, not any more than breastfeeding guarantees a completely
healthy baby. But interventionist birth increases the risk of feeding
problems in much the same way not breastfeeding increases the risk of health
problems.
It seems problematic and disingenious for anyone who claims to be supportive
of breastfeeding to continually insist that how women birth does not matter.
