At the hospital where I work we have poster presentations for Nurse's Week.
Last night I saw a poster on the Nipple Shield. I cannot quote everything included in the poster but I was upset because it included incorrect info on the shield, and I could see no citations for any research that supported anything on her poster(or any references at all). I am also concerned as I feel strongly that the Nipple Shield should not be used AT ALL in hospital due to the fact that it can lower milk transfer and these newborns are getting small quantities of colostrum in these early days. I also believe that newborns should be learning how to breastfeed in these first 2-3 days- not learn how to Nipple Shield Feed!!
I strongly believe that just any RN should never give a mom a shield and that only an LC should give it at a last resort after observing feedings/attempts to latch etc.
Actually I must confess I believe they should never be used in the first 2-3 days of life.
I plan to do some research this myself and correct info presented to all of our nurses.
I wanted to get this question out there and appreciate any replies- personal email/post to group- whatever.
Do you think a Nipple Shield should be used at all in the first 2-3 days of life?
