Ann, I am interested to see if you get any different answers. I would
say it is impossible to tell if baby is nursing well enough if the baby
is also being fed any of the new formulas like the Lipils. I find that
even one bottle a day of formula may increase the stooling. I have
worked with babies who are only getting 4-6 ounces of formula a day but
then have 2-4 BMs. And test weights show they remove very little from
mom, which is why they are not growing or gaining weight and not happy
at the breast. So although their caloric intake is way too low, the
newer formula is making them have what seems like "good" BMs. I tell
moms this is another reason not to supplement in the early days.
