Subject: Re: lactose overload
This scenario suggests more a likelihood of food allergy than "lactose
overload", which would not be the same thing as lactose intolerance.
though the ped seems to be implying they are. Food allergies often do
not become symptomatic until the baby is several weeks old.
Jennifer Tow, IBCLC, CT, USA
"The same pattern occurred when her eldest son reached 5/6 weeks. Her
paed told
her the baby was lactose intolerant and gave them a lactose free
formula. When
baby was introduced to breastmilk, crying started again. Consequently,
weaning
commenced and the baby settled on a regular formula (with lactose!).
This mother is under the impression that her milk is bad for her babies
but is
desperate to breastfeed. For her and the family, pumping before each
feed to
reduce lactose content is not really a realistic option. Has anyone a
suggestion
to help this dyad? "

Rachel,
If you go back to Hathor's website and click on "who is Hathor?" you will
find out more in her blog. Although not a lot. I too am wondering, if
there was some news story on it.

Today's Hathor the Cowgoddess tells about a family whose child was taken
into custody by CPS shortly after it was born, at home, and the home birth
was the reason. When they got to court, the parents were given custody
again on the condition the baby not be breastfed.
If this is a real story, I hope there is more to it than this. Does anyone
know anything about this? Can CPS actually require parents to sign an
agreement not to breastfeed, and if so, under what circumstances?

I attended a Le Leche League conference last spring and I heard a speaker
named Lisa Hiday. She is a lawyer and she spoke about jury duty. She said
the states that were exempting Breastfeeding Mothers from Jury Service were:
California, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Oregon. She said if it was
not one of those to look for an undo hardship exemption or deferral or an
exemption for a stay-at-home parent with a child under a certain age. Hope
this helps you.

I searched the archives and found a lot about jury duty and other states,
but if there were any regarding WA, I missed it, so sorry if this state has
been addressed before. Does anyone in Washington state have any information
about breastfeeding moms being excused from (or bringing their 2-month-old
nursling to) jury duty? I received a summons for jury duty May 22, and if I
have to serve, of course Lachlan will be there nursing the whole time.
thanks,
Vicki Hayes RN IBCLC

Thanks to all of you who sent reference and suggestions so quickly
this afternoon. I am told that the article will appear in the Boston
Herald on Thursday, April 13. I don't know what section. I won't be
able to pick up a copy or look on the web on Thursday, so if someone
sees it on the web or in the paper, please let us know how it is.
