I just sent this message to Nancy--
I can't answer your question, but I do know that there is a boatload of
information on the CDC website because I just accessed it last night. A
surgical nurse at the hospital where I work who is nursing a 3 month old
had a blood splash in her eye. Go to
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5011a1.htm to read all the
info. To find the specific passages regarding breastfeeding, do a
Control-F on your computer and type in "breast feeding" (with the
space). Good luck.
BUT--would any of you more educated Lactnetters be willing to interpret
the current CDC info (or other info if there's something more
appropriate) and post a concise answer to this dilemma for future
events? The first thing I did last night was search Lactnet but found
very little. Perhaps there's something in my reference books, but I
only have older editions at home and when this occurs it's always a
crisis. At least in this case and the call I got last night the source
of the blood is known. A couple years ago one of our breastfeeding OB
nurses had a needle stick and the source was not known.
