Oh wise ones.....

A mother (who has given permission to share this with you)of an 11 mo old
called me today with concern about blood coming from her breast. The baby
has been breastfeeding for the entire 11 mo and does not want to quit. She
first noticed this 2-1/2 weeks ago, when the baby unlatched herself and mom
noticed blood in her mouth (she describes it as bright red). Her nipples are
fine, no cracks or blisters. On her Lt. breast, she notes a lump in her
armpit area as well as on the underside of her breast close to the ribs.
The breast is very painful, she describes that she has delivered 10# babies
vaginally and has done OK with that, "but this really hurts". When she
pumped 2-1/2 weeks ago the milk was red, since then she has pumped twice,
with no discoloration. The nipple/breast on that side does have some
burning. She was treated with Diflucan, the one dose treatment. There has
not been any other symptoms of itching, redness, flaking, stabbing,
radiating pain in her breast, there is no vag yeast infection, diaper rash
on the baby or thrush. There was no relief with the Diflucan treatment.
She has a family history of breast cancer(5 women) and is worried. She has
a mammogram/ductogram scheduled at the beginning of May, she did have an
Ultrasound of that breast that was negative.

Any ideas. I don't know where to send her and the appt can't be moved up.
She would love any ideas that would bring wisdom to this for her.

Thanks in advance. Betsy
