Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
They tell hospitals in the USA how they must function.
Their approval or disapproval affects the Bottom Line: whether or not the
hospital can receive Medicare patients and whether the Govt will reimburse
the hospital for treating those patients.
It's a Very Big Deal.
They come around every 3 years. The hospital prepares for months for the
one day Review, and they even have to pay a sizeable fee to have it done.
One hospital in our area has opted out of the JCAHO process. They are still
in business and seem to be doing just fine.
I am still a neophyte in the "hospital industry" and clearly I just don't
understand it. But I do everything per instructions so I don't mess up my
end of the Review process. And I joyfully check formula supplies for
anything out of date and throw it out - to help the hospital pass the JCAHO
inspection, of course!! And, well... that, too... :-}
Another thing I am not clear on: is it a Govt organization, quasi-Govt org,
or a Non-Govt Org. (NGO)
