I have personal anecdotal evidence. My daughter had T & A out for the same
when she was 30 months old. She was allowed to breastfeed as soon as she
wanted after the procedure. Unfortunately, she didn't want to since her
throat hurt so much, nor would she take liquid tylenol for pain. She
remained on IV fluids overnight (I stayed in the hospital with her). All in
all, her nursing strike lasted a week. I believed she had weaned and was
heartbroken. Nighttime singing with Erin sleeping on my chest took the
place of nursing for the week, but happily she did resume breastfeeding and
went on to nurse till she was four. The night of her surgery was the first
time she ever slept through the night. She also gained about 5 pounds right
away. I assume this had to do with not breathing easily either while
breastfeeding or eating solids. She was a skinny little Minnie (after being
known as "Tunder Tighs" for her first year and a half). She is now a
lovely, healthy, active, and strong 16 year old.
