I read the GAO report. I work in a hospital setting in WV. I have to
give great KUDOS to our local WIC program and WIC breastfeeding Peer
Counselors--and the West Virginia WIC program as a whole. Our 6 month
breast feeding rate was 27%!!
What I don't understand is why all states don't use the materials at
hand. I recently did a seminar for our WIC Breastfeeding Peer
Counselors. I was provided with a WONDERFUL resource. At first I
thought it was from the State of WV, but then realized this was
developed by Best Start Social Marketing through a cooperative agreement
with the US Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service. It
is called "Loving Support Through Peer Counseling Curriculum" for the
Loving Support Makes Breastfeeding Work program, for WIC. I was so
impressed at the materials--from our government!! I also work with WIC
moms from Virginia, as we are just across the border. No offense to
them, but they have never heard of this program, and their breastfeeding
rates are I'm guessing about 1/3 of ours in this county.
