Dear Anne,
Do you know that prolactin treatment for low milk supply in postpartum
period is listed as common intervention in obstetric reference books here,
in Ukraine and Russia?
However, I do not know any woman who was prescribed it in real life.
The preparation is called Lactinum, it is made from anterior pituitary of
cattle and small cattle. For low milk supply intramuscular shots are given,
70-100 units 1-2 times daily, for 5-6 days.

Sincerely yours,
Victoria Nesterova,
bf supporter, Kiev, Ukraine

Subject: study looking for women with low milk supply due to hormonal
reasons/adoptions

Hi Lactnetters
I am working with an MD who is trialing prolactin in a clinical trial/study,
to see if it increases milk supply.
She is looking for women SPECIFICALLY with pituitary problems, prolactin
deficiency, or women wanting to breastfeed who have not given birth (such
as, adoptive mothers). They need to be able to be in the Boston area for
about a week for the trial, and should be healthy women with previous
pituitary surgery, radiation, or Sheehan?s syndrome and prolactin
deficiency, who wish to breastfeed, aged 18-45yrs; who are not taking oral
contraceptives, with no previous breast surgery. This study involves three 8
to 11hr admissions, 4 outpatient visits, administration of prolactin and
blood draws; up to $120 stipend. (I will throw in here that the outcomes on
other subjects so far are encouraging). The study has IRB approval, and is
being conducted at Mass. General Hospital. If you know any women who would
like to try this (must meet the criteria above - not just any mom with low
supply) - please contact me by email at [log in to unmask]
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Anne
