Mothers on anticonvulsants are usually prescribed more than 1mg of folic
acid, because many anticonvulsants increase folic acid (and vitamin D)
metabolism and are associated with birth defects. The ideal dose is not
yet known, but 2-4 mg is often prescribed. The doctor should know the
mom's whole history, and probably has reasons for the dose recommended.
Mom can talk to him/her about these reasons to understand the
recommendation, and how firmly grounded it is in research or clinical
experience.
