I just spoke with a mom of a 3 week old baby who was jaundiced and slow to
gain wt at first. Doing well now. Totally breastfed except for one 2ounce
feeding. She was told by a nurse practitioner to supplement 1 time day
with 2ounces of ebm fortified with 1 scoop of powdered formula. Does
anyone know if this is ok? It seems to me this would change osmolarity and
not be proper use of the formula. I think she is better off just
breastfeeding since she pumps 2 ounces and then gives it in a bottle. She
also states this makes the baby sleep longer (with the powdered formula)
and probably misses a breastfeeding because of it. I didn't think I could
tell her that and go against the practitioner w/o some hard facts.
Thanks again for your help.
