Posting this for Catherine W Genna:
This has been discussed before, but basically the main problem is life of
the pump, rather than contamination issues.
The Purely Yours is a closed system, so there is no contamination risk when
used with the Ameda hygeinikit that it comes with. The PNS does not have a
filter between the kit and the motor, so contamination is a theoretical
possibility, but no case of mother or infant illness has been reported yet
from this pump.
HOWEVER, both of these machines have a warranty of one year on the motor.
They are meant to be used 3 times a day for that year. Therefore, buying a
used pump unless it was used by a close friend or family member who recently
quit pumping and bf after a very short time entails the risk that it is not
going to work for long enough. The first sign of a worn motor is usually a
declining milk supply. It's better for this mom to rent a portable hospital
grade pump than to buy a used consumer grade electric pump. Moms tend to
have this fantasy that these consumer grade pumps will last them for 2 or 3
babies, but they usually don't, so renting the better pumps is indeed cost
effective.
