There is a good discussion on chicken pox in BF Answer Book and Riordan.
They both say, if it is truly chicken pox, baby and mom should be separated
if it occurs in first 7 days,. Immunities do not show up in mom's milk for
about 48 hours after onset. But the baby can receive mom's pumped milk!
There are tests to determine if this is really shingles and the diagnosis
needs to be confirmed quickly, because if it is truly shingles or chicken
pox baby can be given ZIG (if available).
Herpes Zoster (shingles) is a different story. It is a reactivation
infection. The infectious part is milder.
Frankly, rashes are hard via phone or e-mail! Some expert needs to look at
both parents and make a determination. That said, it doesn't sound like
shingles to me :-) The locations sound wrong. Pat in SNJ
