I'd recommend Sue Gerhardt's book Why Love Matters: how affection
shapes a baby's brain (Brunner Routledge) which is an accessible
account of the literature on neurology, psychiatry, development and
physiology as it pertains to infant care.

My experience is that nurses on paediatric wards seem to get hardened
to the sound of babies screaming - maybe it's the only way they can
get their job done. Most maternity units no longer have central
nurseries (thank goodness) but sick infants cared for in hospital may
be left alone and untended for hours, and may scream and scream
(until they give up).

This cannot be good for them, in the short or long term, and the
Gerhardt book explains why.
