Sometimes when a baby has a weak suck or oral motor issues, he/she can live
off a good MER for a while but than starts losing weight later on. Sometimes
as late as 2-3 months old when baby starts lagging. Test weights on more
than one feeding would help. I have worked with several babies who had this
pattern and their test weights show consistant lowish intake for their age.
Some have low stamina and can not remove more than 1.5 to 2 ounces at one
time before tireing, so as they get bigger they stop gaining weight because
intake is too low. When oral motor issues are apparent, I sent them to a
good SLP or OT for assessment and treatment.
Is mom on any kind of birth control? Sometimes this will lower the supply.
